Position Objectives:

Performs tasks pertaining to installation, maintenance and repairing of equipment and facilities.  Operates equipment and performs manual labor tasks associated with public works projects.

Works under general guidance and direction of the Public Works Supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities:

(The listed examples may not include all duties performed.)

  1. Participates in inspection, maintenance, construction and repairs of all city streets, water works and waste water works.
  2. Follows all safety procedures and practices.
  3. Assists with cleaning, digging, repairing pipe, valves and connections and operating various mechanical tools and equipment.
  4. Plans work procedures, gives necessary instructions on more difficult operations to temporary personnel.
  5. Checks grade, establishes drainage, reads plans and profiles in construction of public works facilities.
  6. Assists with snow removal by operating the one-way plow, front end loader, trucks and motor graders.
  7. May assist in the operation of the rubble site, swimming pool, maintenance on curb & gutter, city right-of-way, tree trimming, painting, and various small maintenance projects
  8. Answers complaints and makes inspections of complaints and issues appropriate corrective measures.

Minimum Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, equipment and practices essential to maintenance and repair of public works projects. Ability to plan and effectuate assigned work program. Ability to work without direct supervision. Ability to operate various types of truck, automotive and mechanical equipment including medium and heavy machinery. Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and the necessary safety precautions to be observed. Ability to perform physical tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of public works projects. Ability to perform moderately heavy manual tasks requiring the full range of body movements and to work in inclement weather. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the City Council and the public.

Desirable Experience and Training. Completion of standard high school course work (diploma or GED), preferably supplemented by formal training in either mechanical or technical school. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

Driver’s License Required. Must possess a valid South Dakota commercial driver’s license and must be insurable under the City’s municipal liability coverage.

Residency Requirement. This position has been defined as essential to the operation of the City and therefore, residency must be within the city limits.
